Knocking Into Things Along The Way

Have done to help the blind - me

In the beginning, I took a hand held magnifier to work. It was okay. Eventually, I took a larger, more powerful light to work. The boss laughed, but I found him using it sometimes. I also used a scan pen. It would scan a line and then read it back.

I got audio books from the library. It didn’t matter who wrote them, or what about, I listened to anything they had. I recognized pictures. I have an account with the Braille who sends me audio books by any author, subject, series I request.

My computer screen has grown over the years and so have the letters. Love that control/scroll feature. I have large key letters. stick on.

As the “eye thing” got worse, we started to look at the house. We always talked aobut doing things to the house and a few years earlier than we planned was do-able. My husband wanted me to be able to enjoy the changes before I couldnt see them. We got a contractor who redid two bathrooms, laundry room, electricty, and plumbing and then the kitchen.

The kitchen was done with all shelves as slide outs. Lighting to adjust to what I need to see and easy access to everything. Just wonderful. 5 years later, I still walk into it and can’t believe its mine.

But- I did have to mark certain spots. The double oven has little teeny tiny letters on the functions for the oven. One oven is conventional and one is convection. The oven settings arent in the same place on each pad. I had to put small round sticky dots on the “oven” setting, so that I didnt “clean” the oven after I put the food in……

Same with the Dish washer. for the first four days I was using rinse only……More sticky dots.

And my wonderful Spice rack. I put on a slow cooker of beef stew for my dad and cousin, both who don’t like hot food - spicy hot. When we came home to eat it. It was “smokin’ hot”. I had picked out the red pepper instead of paprika (too many p’s and r’s). That weekend, all the spicy jars, got stars on top and on the sides.

You will see arrows in marker pen on all the button pushing items in the house.

Now I walk with a monocular. I can see the light on the other side of the street. And even more important, I can see the food menus that hang over the back wall at the food court at the mall.

Besides the Braille, there are many organizations that provide wonderful aids if you want to look. Maxi-aids and Enable Mart to name a few.
